Will You Buy My Album?
As I get ready to release my CD in September, I wonder about how many I should manufacture? Should I give away any? Will I recoup my costs? I’m not looking to get rich, but it’s a personal goal I want to accomplish.
I saw this Dilbert cartoon that pretty much somes up the state of the music industry right now:
The truth is that people like myself don’t need a record company to get an album released. I can create good recordings in my home office and distribute the album through both digital and retail channels. But making money (or at least recouping your costs) are another matter though, because your ability to market your music is limited. “Viral Marketing” is really your only option, meaning that you need to leverage the internet, friends, and family to build up some awareness. If they are willing to pass on news about your release to their family and friends, you may produce enough buzz to get some CDs sold. Without that, you are simply one of the millions who are doing the same thing.

cool! the cartoon is great! really says it all. you think about recording a video and sticking on YouTube? you may get a lot of hit that way. Of course there are a TON of them out there. Might want to do a cover song to get things going. Cover that Beatles tune you posted on the blog a few weeks ago!
Also, we can use StumbleUpon and maybe even DIGG :-)
